Saturday 28th November:

Continuding Professional Development (CPD):

A full day workshop with Dr. Greg Madison

Homelessness in Human Experience.

This one-day workshop will explore how human experience is unfinished, migratory, not settled and complete. As a group we will look at our moment to moment experiencing and how this awareness might impact our understanding of therapeutic interactions. The terms ‘home’, ‘homelessness’, ‘migratory truth’ etc might be useful metaphors to develop an understanding of client work, therapeutic concepts, human change, etc that values the unfinished flow of experiencing. The workshop will be an existential interpretation of Focusing and the philosophy of Eugene Gendlin.

Greg is an existential psychotherapist, supervisor, mediator, and psychologist, lecturing on post-graduate faculties in Canada and the UK. Greg has a special interest in ‘existential migration’ and also offers international training in Focusing and Experiential-Existential Therapy. He works and lives in Brighton and has a private practice in central London.

The Bodymind Phenomenology of the therapists internal process.’

This workshop is an opportunity for psychotherapists to reflect on their work in terms of the bodymind dynamic between themselves and their clients.

The field of counselling and psychotherapy has traditionally had a bias towards verbal interaction and language, the reflective and symbolizing mind, thinking and philosophizing.  We have accumulated a lot of expertise in bringing these capacities of the mind to bear on our therapeutic work.  But many of the patterns in which our clients feel most trapped are rooted in implicit memory, in preverbal or pre-reflexive experience and in the body.  Modern neuroscience reminds us of the subtlety, significance and pervasiveness of non-verbal and right-brain to right-brain communication which is at the heart of the therapeutic process.

How can we deepen our awareness of these subtle processes, not readily available to consciousness?

How can we use awareness of the myriad of internal perceptions - our own physical, emotional, imaginal, mental bodymind processes - to inform us about the client's inner world and the relationship dynamic between us?

These are some of the questions which will be explored by focusing on the relationship with one particular client.  Using role-play, imagination and a form of collective enquiry, participants will work in triads and in the whole group, to draw out and experiment with the bodymind phenomenology of internal and external relationship.
