The SEA was founded in 1988 by Emmy Van Deurzen and has since attracted considerable interest and respect both from within the United Kingdom as well as Internationally.

The society is comprised of a network of professionals and students,  Counsellors, Psychotherapists, Psychologists and Philosophers from the United Kingdom, as well as Internationally. Find a Therapist.

Particular emphasis is given to the development and dissemination of existential and phenomenological ideas within the field of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The Society is a member of the International  Federation of Daseinsanalysis and is a registering organisation of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

The Society publishes the Journal, Existential Analysis, twice each year, current volume is no. 18.1, back issues are available for purchase in either PDF format or hard copy. We also produce a newsletter - the Hermeneutic Circular three times each year.

The Society holds an
Annual Conference in London which focuses on a topic of central importance. The 2007 conference was entitled ‘The Im/Possibility of Language’.

During the academic term, a monthly Forum is held, at which an original paper is presented by its author and is followed by a discussion and refreshments.

There are also periodic
Discussion Groups for members to discuss their responses to a set text or presentation, and also to relate the text to therapeutic practice.

The annual
Talk from the Chair is held in the Autumn Term and precedes the AGM, which is followed by a social event for members.
